Loman's Blast from the Past Gives M-Braves Rickwood Win
June 25, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
Birmingham, AL - Behind a homer and three RBIs from Seth Loman, the Mississippi Braves sank the Birmingham Barons 5-2 in Wednesday's 19th annual Rickwood Classic.
It was the double-A Braves' third win in three tries (1998, 2009, 2014) in the annual event at historic Rickwood Field. Built in 1910, Rickwood is the oldest surviving professional ballpark in the country.
The Braves (4-3; 43-33) got a great start from Greg Ross (1-0) in his double-A debut, throwing 5 2/3 frames for two runs on five hits for the win.
He was matched early by Barons (3-3; 32-44) starter Nick McCully (3-6), but the Braves finally broke through in the fourth inning. Mycal Jones doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame and came in on a Loman double. Matt Kennelly tripled to right field to plate Loman for a 2-0 lead.
Mississippi extended their lead in the sixth. Cedric Hunter drew a leadoff walk against reliever Evan Campbell, and Loman launched his 10th homer of the season to left-center to give the M-Braves a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, Kyle Kubitza hit the first of his two doubles in the game, and David Rohm knocked him home with a single for a 5-0 lead.
The Barons made it a bit closer in the sixth, scoring the only two runs off Ross at the end of his start. Chris Curly drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Rangel Ravelo clubbed a two-out double to put the Barons on the board. The Braves went to their bullpen for John Cornely, and Luis Sierra singled on the first pitch to pull it to 5-2.
That was the only hit Cornely allowed, retiring the next seven he faced before Chasen Shreve came on to strike out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.
The two clubs return to Regions Field on Thursday with game three of the five-game set. The Braves send right-hander Williams Perez (3-3, 2.18) in the start against right-hander Chris Beck (3-6, 3.43) for Birmingham. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM CT.
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
