Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL -- Mark Thomas hit two home runs including a grand slam as the Mobile BayBears (45-30) dropped the Jacksonville Suns (38-37) 9-2 Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. BayBears RHP Justin Fitzgerald (7-1) backed Thomas' performance with a season high 10 strikeouts on the mound. The win over the Suns was the BayBears fifth victory over Jacksonville in six games in 2014 after Mobile took four of five against the Suns in the first half of the season.
Jacksonville took the first lead of the game in the top of the first on a Brady Shoemaker RBI double but Thomas hit his first of two home runs, a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the second to put Mobile up 2-1. In the fourth inning Thomas and the BayBears struck again. Walks to Jon Griffin and Ryan Court and a base hit by Gerson Montilla set up Thomas with the bases loaded and the BayBears backstop delivered on a grand slam to left center to put Mobile up 6-1.
Mobile added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back RBI singles from Raywilly Gomez and Sean Jamieson. Jamieson finished with multiple hits to extend his hit streak to 11 games and Montilla capped the BayBears scoring in the eighth inning with a solo home run, his third long ball of the season.
Fitzgerald won his seventh game in nine starts with the BayBears this season. The righty allowed just one run on two hits and struck out a season-high ten in six innings on the mound. The loss was credited to Suns LHP Chipper Smith (2-3). The lefty allowed six runs on five hits over five innings of work.
Mobile and Jacksonville continue the five-game series with game two on Wednesday. First pitch at "The Hank" is scheduled for 12:05 PM. The Suns will send RHP Jay Rogers (2-2, 5.34) to the mound. RHP Bradin Hagens (6-3, 4.28) will take the hill for the BayBears.
