Long Ball Helps Spikes to 5-3 Win over Jammers in Extras

JAMESTOWN, NY - Three State College Spikes home runs, including a broken-bat shot from Rowan Wick for his New York-Penn League-leading sixth of the year, powered the Spikes into the tenth inning, where they defeated the Jamestown Jammers, 5-3, on Friday night at Russell Diethrick Park.

Wick upped his RBI total to 10 on the year, second behind Jamestown's (2-6) Tanner Gushue, with his seventh-inning solo blast. The ball traveled approximately 370 feet over the right field wall despite Wick's bat splitting in two.

Alex De Leon then tied the game for the Spikes (5-3) in the ninth inning with his first home run of the season, crushing a ball to left-center field to knot the contest, 3-3.

In the tenth, the Spikes took a lead they would not relinquish as Leobaldo Pina doubled to left-center field and scored on Jhohan Acevedo's two-out single. Acevedo would then steal second and score on a Jammers error.

State College started the home run party early, as Danny Diekroeger smashed his first professional home run to right field in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Jamestown's Jordan Luplow also homered, with his solo shot giving the Jammers the lead in the third inning. Luplow and Deybi Garcia each produced multiple hits for Jamestown.

Spikes reliever Kyle Grana (1-0) earned the victory, logging three innings from the seventh through the ninth and allowing just one unearned run on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Grana struck out three as well. Jeff Rauh (1) pitched a perfect tenth inning with a strikeout to earn the save.

Daniel Poncedeleon started and went two innings on the mound for State College in his professional debut. Poncedelon allowed a run on two hits and two walks. Trey Nielsen was solid in four innings of middle relief, yielding Luplow's homer but no more runs or hits. Nielsen compiled five strikeouts during his outing.

Jammers reliever Eric Karch (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned, over two innings of work. Karch struck out two in the effort. The Jammers' loss was their fifth in a row.

Saturday, the Spikes and Jammers finish up a two-game mini-series at Russell Diethrick Park with a 7:05 p.m. matchup. Right-hander Cody Schumacher (0-0) will become the second straight State College starter to make his professional debut as the Cardinals' 2014 36th-round draft choice gets the ball. Jamestown will go with right-hander Alex McRae (0-0).

The Spikes return home on Tuesday, June 24 to start a stretch of four home games in six nights with a T-Shirt Tuesday Giveaway, presented byMcDonald's, to the first 500 fans of all ages.
