Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters scored three runs without a base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 3-3, but the Connecticut Tigers scored six times in the top of the 10th inning and held off a Vermont rally in the bottom of the 10th for a 9-7 New York-Penn League victory Friday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters trailed 3-0 as the bottom of the ninth started, but used four walks, a couple of wild pitches and an error to score the three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Vermont had a chance for the win with the bases loaded and just one out, but Yairo Munoz lined out hard to right field and Chris Wolfe flied out to left to send the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, the Tigers quickly took the lead back on a two-run Franklin Navarro double and two-run Brett Pirtle single off Vermont reliever Jonnie Massad for a 7-3 advantage. Connecticut added two more runs in the inning on a run-scoring fielder's choice for the eventual deciding run and a Joey Pankake RBI triple for a six-run lead headed to the bottom of the 10th.
Vermont again wouldn't go quietly as Ben McQuown led off the 10th with a walk and scored on a Dayton Alexander RBI double, then later in the inning Justin Higley added a one-out two-run triple to center and scored on a Gabriel Santana RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 9-7. After a Joey Bennie two-out infield single, Munoz came to the plate as the tying run and grounded out to short to end the game.
Johnnie Kirkland (1-1) got a blown save and allowed four runs (two earned) over 1 1/3 inning, but picked up the win for Connecticut (3-5), while Cesar Burgos recorded the final two outs for the save. Massad (0-1) allowed six runs on five hits, all in the 10th, to take the loss for Vermont (4-4), while Alexander was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Brett Vertigan scored twice after coming into the game as a pinch runner in the ninth inning.
The Lake Monsters and Tigers will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Saturday evening begining at 6:05 pm, then close out Vermont's seven-game homestand with "Hot Dog Heaven: on Sunday at 5:05 pm.
