Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Another One-Run Loss
After collecting their first win of the 2014 season, the Aberdeen IronBirds fell victim to another one-run loss to the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 5-4; it was their fifth one-run loss. The Yankees were able to score three runs in the sixth to take the lead, a lead that the IronBirds weren't ever able to reclaim. Newcomer Jonah Heim got his first career home run in the second off of David Palladino with two outs on the board, cutting the lead to 2-1. Aberdeen would eventually tie it up in the fourth, and then take the lead in the fifth thanks to a stolen base by Sam Kimmel, who was then batted in through a Ronarsy Ledesma single. In the sixth the Yankees took the lead thanks to a two-run shot and a single and RBI, making it 5-3. The IronBirds were able to get another run in the eighth but that was the last run the Birds could muster in the game.
Pitching and Defense
The IronBirds bullpen didn't get off the best of starts. Janser Severino made his second start of the season, but gave up a lead-off double and two walks in the first inning, before Nathan Mikolas hit a two out, two run single down the left field line, giving the Yankees a two-run lead. Dariel Delgado was given the loss, after coming on in the fourth. Delgado finished with 2.1 IP, allowed five hits, three runs, got two K's and finished with a 5.06 ERA.
The Good ... and the Bad
Despite the team's record, the Aberdeen bullpen has been relatively solid. The IronBirds are third in the New York-Penn League with an ERA of 2.28. The IronBirds have three starting pitchers with ERA's of 0.00. The IronBirds' defense has also done well, as it is second in the NY-Penn League in earned runs and fielding percentage with .980. Although players such as C Alex Murphy (second in the league with a .407 batting average) and LF Sam Kimmel (.318 batting average and 7 hits), the IronBirds are second to last in the league in runs per game and seventh out of 14 in batting average at .214.
First Home Game of 2014
With their first seven road games out of the war, the IronBirds finally get to play in front of the home crowd. Today's game marks the first of a five-game home stand, three versus Brooklyn and two versus Staten Island.
