Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners held a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning but the Tri-City ValleyCats fought back to take a 7-6 lead. The Spinners were not to be deterred however, tying the game on a Franklin Guzman home run and winning the game on a single up the middle by Mike Meyers to send the crowd home happy.
The win was the Spinners fourth consecutive win and kept them atop the Stedler Division standings.
It was Jake Drehoff poster giveaway night at LeLacheur Park, but the ValleyCats were unimpressed as Marc Wilk hit a leadoff home run to give Tri-City (5-3) an early 1-0 lead. Drehoff settled down, striking out the last two batters of the inning.
Lowell (4-4) broke through for a run in the bottom half of the third inning. Betts led off the inning with a double and Raymel Flores sacrificed him over to third. Alixon Suarez followed with a single up the middle, scoring Betts to even the score at one.
The Spinners took the lead in the fourth inning and it was Betts again delivering the big hit. After a one-out single by Mike Meyers, Betts hit a towering homerun to left field, his second home run in as many home games at LeLacheur Park to give Lowell a 3-1 lead.
Lowell padded the lead in the fifth inning against ValleyCats reliever Raul Rivera. After back-to-back walks to Bryan Hudson and Mauricio Dubon, an infield single by Andres Torres loaded the bases and a Sam Travis double play brought home Hudson. Ariel Ovando couldn't handle Franklin Guzman's shallow pop-up, allowing Dubon to score to move the Spinners ahead, 5-1.
Tri-City and Lowell would trade runs in the sixth inning, with a sacrifice fly from Dubon bringing home the Spinners run, pushing the score to 6-2.
The ValleyCats would stage a seventh inning rally, taking a 7-6 lead by taking advantage of a key error by Travis. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, a groundout moved both runners into scoring position. AJ Reed followed with a sharp single to first, but the ball exploded on Travis and both runners came into score. A JD Davis double followed, scoring Reed before Ellis Jimenez came on in relief. After a walk to Nick Tanielu, Ricky Gingras singled to tie the game at six and a groundout by Ovando brought home Tanielu with the go ahead run.
The Spinners fought back in the bottom half of the inning, evening the score on a solo home run by Franklin Guzman off the left field videoboard to even the score at seven and Meyers brought home Longhi for the game winning run and an 8-7 final.
Offensively, Meyers was the hero as part of a two hit night but Betts was the offensive star, going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI, scoring three runs.
Jimenez (1-1, 1.69) was the winner for the Spinners, allowing just the one unearned run in 2.2 innings, striking out three.
The two teams are back at it Saturday for Flat Screen TV Giveaway. Nine TVs will be given away throughout the game and Randy Perez (0-0, 1.80) is on the mound for the 5:05 first pitch.
