Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE - IN) --- b0 The Evansville Otters held an early two run lead but the London Rippers chipped away a little at a time for the 3-2 victory on Saturday night.

Evansville took a 2-0 lead in front of 4,721 fans at Historic Bosse Field. Shortstop Luis Parache and Nick Schwaner each hit RBI doubles in the first inning for the early advantage.

Otter starting pitcher Matt Crim held the two-run lead until the top of the third when London rallied back for a run.

The Rippers then added two more runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead. Left fielder Matt Wright ripped a two RBI single to right field, scoring catcher Jim Vahalik and right fielder Aaron Glaum for a 3-2 lead.

The Otters appeared to tie the game in the eighth when Matt Sheely hit a long fly ball to left field. Wright sprinted back on the ball, crashed into an advertisement on the outfield fence, and ran through an old bullpen door to the other side. After home plate umpire Joe Lewis examined the play behind the fence, he called Sheely back to second for a ground rule double. The outfielder was then sacrificed over to third by infielder Greg Fontenot but was stranded after back to back outs to end the inning.

Down 3-2 In the ninth, first baseman Nick Schwaner led off the inning with a single to left, but was left on base as former Evansville Otter David Francis recorded the last three outs for the London win.

The Rippers are now 12-15 this season as the Otters stand at 9-18.

London starter Yohan Gonzalez improves to 3-1 on the year, throwing six innings and allowing just two runs. Evansville pitcher Matt Crim took his fourth loss of season, allowing three runs in a span of five innings. Francis earned his fourth save with a scoreless final inning.

The Otters return to Historic Bosse Field on Sunday night when they take on the River City Rascals in the first game of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. as Evansville celebrates Bosse Fieldrquote s 97th birthday. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the box office at 812-435-8686.
