Gateway Grizzlies News Release
NORMAL, IL - Tim Brown fired eight strong innings and the Gateway Grizzlies held on in the ninth inning by leaving the game-tying run on second base in a 3-2 win over the Normal Cornbelters Saturday night. The win gave the Grizzlies, who have now won four games in a row, the series sweep. Gateway has won eight of their last nine games.
Brown (3-2), who lowered his ERA to 1.81, gave up just one run on six hits. Brown pitched into the seventh inning for the sixth time in six starts. He struck out a season-high seven batters and walked only two.
Gateway (15-12) gave Brown just enough offense. Jon Myers started the scoring in the second with a solo homer, his fifth of the season.
Normal (8-17) tied it at one in the bottom of the second. Robert Brooks doubled and moved to second on a groundout before being driven in by a Pat Dockendorf infield RBI single. It was Dockendorf's first professional hit and RBI.
The scoring stayed the same until the eighth inning when Myers and Case Rigby reached base on two Normal errors and a wild pitch. With one out and runners on second and third, Richie Jimenez Jr. recorded an RBI groundout to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
Gateway tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning to push their lead to a pair of runs. Chris McClendon picked up the RBI on a single.
Richard Barrett worked around trouble in the bottom of the ninth to get his team-best fifth save. Three straight singles started the inning for the Cornbelters, but with the bases loaded and no outs Barrett got a double play and a groundout finish the inning and game with only one more run coming across.
The Grizzlies continue their nine-game road trip and try to make it five wins in a row with game one of a three-game series Sunday night against the Rockford RiverHawks. Ja'Vaun West (0-0) makes his second professional appearance and first professional start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 6:05 CT.
