Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, came up just short, falling by a final score of 3-2 to the Gateway Grizzlies Saturday night at the Corn Crib. 'Belter reliever Brendon Smith (0-1) took the loss while Grizzlies' starter Tim Brown (3-2) got the win.
The Grizzlies were the first to get on the board as Jon Myers hit a two-out home run in the 2nd inning off of starting pitcher Ryan Krumlauf.
The CornBelters were quick to respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After hitting a stand-up double, shortstop Robert Brooks was brought home when third baseman Pat Dockendorf hit a single for his first professional at bat, as well as his first RBI.
Gateway took the lead late in the game, with a score of 2-1, when two CornBelter errors allowed an unearned run by the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies extended their lead in the 9th inning as Gateway brought in one run to make the score 3-1.
Normal rallied in the bottom of the 9th as they loaded the bases. Robert Brooks scored on a Chico Gomez ground out. That would be it for the 'Belters though, as Alvaro Ramirez left Ty Wiesemeyer on second base, ending the game.
CornBelters will hit the road tomorrow and head to Southern Illinois to play the Miners. Right-handed pitcher Daniel Britt (2-2, 2.64 ERA) will take the mound for normal while Southern Illinois will put Jimmy Albury (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on the hill. Sunday night's game is scheduled to start at 5:05 with pregame coverage beginning on WJBC.com at 4:50.
