Gwinnett Stripers News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Zach Logue fell two outs shy of a 7.0-inning no-hitter but settled for an impressive one-hit complete-game shutout as the Gwinnett Stripers (20-20) won 1-0 to split a doubleheader with the Memphis Redbirds (20-20) on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. Memphis won the opener 6-1.
Decisive Plays (Game 1): Luke Waddell tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly scoring J.P. Martinez, but the Redbirds responded with a five-run bottom of the third. Jose Fermin put Memphis back ahead with an RBI double, and after a fielding error, Thomas Saggese added an RBI single and Luken Baker crushed a three-run homer to put the game out of reach at 6-1.
Decisive Plays (Game 2): Forrest Wall led off with a single against Sem Robberse, stole second, and scored on a two-out double by Eli White. Gwinnett stranded four baserunners the rest of the way against Robberse (L, 4-2), who went the distance. Logue retired 13 straight batters to start the game before hitting Alfonso Rivas with a pitch in the fifth. The only other baserunner against him came with one out in the seventh, as Saggese singled to left. He was quickly erased, however, as Baker bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Key Contributors: Logue (W, 1-3) narrowly missed pitching the third no-hitter in Gwinnett history (would have been the first of 7.0 innings) but did deliver the club's fifth one-hit shutout all-time (third of less than 9.0 innings). White went a combined 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI in the two games. Gordon Graceffo (W, 4-3) threw a 115-pitch complete game in game one for the Redbirds (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO).
Noteworthy: Logue is the first Gwinnett pitcher to throw a one-hitter since Kyle Wright also did it over 7.0 innings on July 8, 2021 vs. Nashville (won 6-0). Wall saw his nine-game run scoring streak snapped in game one, leaving him one game shy of the Gwinnett record (10 games, 2x, last: William Contreras, July 14-25, 2021). He went on to score Gwinnett's lone run in the nightcap.
Next Game (Wednesday, May 15): Gwinnett at Memphis, 1:05 p.m. ET at AutoZone Park. Broadcast: 12:50 p.m. ET on MyCountry993.com. RHP Darius Vines (0-0, 3.52 ERA) will start for Gwinnett against LHP Zack Thompson (1-0, 0.84 ERA) for the Redbirds.
Next Home Game (Tuesday, May 21): Gwinnett vs. Jacksonville, 7:05 p.m. ET at Coolray Field. Broadcast: 6:50 p.m. ET on MyCountry993.com and Bally Live. It's the return of Coolray Family Value Tuesday at Coolray Field, with $2 hot dogs and $1 desserts.
