Manchester Monarchs News Release
The Monarchs continued their unbeaten streak on the road with wins at the Worcester Centrum on Friday night and the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. The Monarchs defeated the Worcester IceCats by a final score of 3-2 Friday night before coming back against the Portland Pirates in overtime Saturday night. Manchester has now compiled a 7-1-1-0 record and sits in second place in the North Division behind Providence.
On Friday night, three power play goals from the Monarchs proved to be just enough as the club extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 3-2 win at Worcester's Centrum Centre against the IceCats. Manchester went 3-for-9 on the man advantage.
Eric Healey's power play goal at 17:14 of the third period was the game-winning tally. The goal, Healey's fourth, was assisted on by Mike Cammalleri.
The Monarchs and the IceCats each registered second period goals. Mark Rycroft intercepted Monarchs netminder Cristobal Huet's clearing attempt from behind the Monarchs net and wheeled around to score into an open net at 5:45. The Monarchs then used the power play to their advantage later in the period as Healey netted his third goal of the season at 16:06 to tie the game at 2-2. Steve Heinze and Cammalleri were credited with assists on the play.
The IceCats netted the first goal of the game short-handed. Blake Evans was credited with the score at 11:57 of period one. The goal was assisted by Jeff Panzer.
The Monarchs rallied seconds later, scoring on the power play at 12:33. Heinze extended his team-best goal streak to four games and his personal point streak to six games with the tally. Cammalleri and Healey assisted on the play.
On Saturday night, it took 50 shots, but the Monarchs extended their winning streak to six games with a 2-1 overtime win over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.
The game-winning goal was scored 46 seconds into the extra session by Jared Aulin, who took an offensive zone pass from winger Derek Bekar and calmly slipped a backhanded shot past Pirates goaltender Maxime Ouellet. The goal capped a dominating performance by the Monarchs, who outshot the Pirates 43 to six in the final two periods and overtime.
The Monarchs stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1-0) despite failing to score on the power play for the first time this season. The Monarchs also won despite being held to a season-low two goals in the game.
Ouellet frustrated the Monarchs in the second period as he stopped all of the record high 29 shots Manchester triggered against him. The previous high for Manchester shots in a period this season had been 17.
The Pirates converted on an early power play chance to take a 1-0 first period lead. Colin Forbes blasted a shot past Manchester netminder Travis Scott at 3:03. Peter Ferraro and Ivan Ciernik set up Forbes for the right point shot.
Mike Cammalleri's highlight reel goal four minutes later tied the game. Cammalleri beat both a Portland defender and Ouellet before roofing a backhanded shot past the goaltender at 7:15. Defenseman Chris Aldous and winger Pavel Rosa assisted as Cammalleri registered his team-leading 14th point.
