November 6, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 6, 2002) - Andre Savage recorded his second four-point game of the young season and Mark Greig added a goal and two assists as the Philadelphia Phantoms posted a 7-2 victory this morning over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. A total of 9,137 fans attended the team's first-ever School Day Game, which began at 11:05 a.m.
Savage totaled two goals and two assists, while Kirby Law, John Slaney and Wade Skolney each contributed two points for Philadelphia, which snapped a two-game losing streak. The seven goals scored and five-goal victory margin are the most and highest, respectively, for the Phantoms since a 7-2 triumph at Hartford last Jan. 18.
Goaltender Antero Niittymaki finished with 23 saves to notch his first win since Oct. 18 - also against the Penguins. Philadelphia improved to 22-10-3 all-time against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and is unbeaten in its last nine games at home against the Penguins (7-0-2).
The Phantoms snapped a scoreless tie with a pair of goals over a span of 2:11 late in the first period. Savage netted the first goal - his 100th as a pro and second of the season - at the 17:43 mark, with assists going to Greig and Slaney. Mike Siklenka then doubled the lead with six seconds left in the period during a 4-on-3 situation, as he knocked in a rebound of David Harlock's shot from the point. It was Siklenka's second tally of the year.
Konstantin Koltsov cut the lead to 2-1 with his third goal at the 15:56 mark of the second period, but Greig answered 44 seconds later on the power play. Brad Tiley and Savage set up Greig's seventh goal of the season, a line drive from the far circle.
Philadelphia blew the game open with three goals over the first 5:35 of the third period. Savage began the onslaught 22 seconds into the period with his second of the game before rookie Patrick Sharp took a pass from Law and tipped it over Penguins goaltender Sebastien Caron at the 4:55 mark for his fourth goal of the year.
Ben Stafford got into the scoring act 40 seconds later after the Penguins failed to clear the puck out of their end. Skolney and Peter Vandermeer assisted on Stafford's third of the year that made it 6-1 with 14:25 remaining.
Michal Sivek tallied Wilkes-Barre's final goal on a shorthanded breakaway, his third, with 3:29 to play. Law capped the scoring on a mini breakaway 81 seconds later, as Skolney and Ian MacNeil assisted on his fourth goal of the year.
The Phantoms hopped on a bus after the game for a match-up with the Norfolk Admirals on Thursday night. The teams will then meet up again on at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at the First Union Spectrum in a game televised live on CN8. Philadelphia will play its fourth game in five days on Sunday, when it entertains the Hamilton Bulldogs at 6:05 p.m.
Phantoms Notes: Skolney recorded his first career multi-point game ... Savage also eclipsed 200 points in the AHL ... Philadelphia is 2-0 on Wednesdays this season ... The Phantoms will be playing four games in five days 10 times in 2002-03 ... Greig has 13 points (7G,6A) in 10 games this year ... Savage previously registered four points - all assists - on Oct. 18 vs. the Penguins.
