Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs picked up another important win on Wednesday, beating Sioux Falls 7-6 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 23-14 on the season.

The Saltdogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the first three innings, battering Pheasants starter Brian Flores (1-3). Lincoln scored three in the first inning, on a sacrifice fly by Phil Hawke and a two-run home run by Argelis Nunez. Flores retired the side in order in the second, but Hawke scored on an error in the third, and Juan Richardson added an RBI single for a five-run advantage.

Lincoln starter Chris Britton (4-3) held the powerful Sioux Falls offense in check over the first three innings, and set a Saltdogs record by striking out four batters in the second inning (one batter reached first on a passed ball). The Pheasants, however, started chipping away in the middle innings. Brandon Sing started the rally with a two-run homer in the fourth, his league-leading 15th of the season. Gavin Dickey answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2, but Sioux Falls tacked a run in the top of the fifth. Juan Richardson cracked another solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 7-3, but the Pheasants chased Britton with three runs in the top of the sixth.

The Saltdogs bullpen, however, proved equal to the task of holding a 7-6 lead. Ben Paxton tossed two scoreless innings, Adam Daniels retired all four batters he faced, and Chris Thompson got the final two outs to earn his 13th save. Sioux Falls did get a hit off of Thompson, but he ended the game by inducing a double play.

Nunez finished the night 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Dickey went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Richardson ended up 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. The Saltdogs have taken the first two games of the series, and now trail the Pheasants by two games in the American Association North with eleven games to play in the first half.

Lincoln goes for the sweep Thursday night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Tim Brown will take the mound for the Saltdogs.
