St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA (June 23, 2010) - The base hit numbers were tilted so far in the favor of the St. Paul Saints that the final outcome was a little surprising, but despite a 14-5 edge in hits the Saints lost their sixth consecutive game 5-4 to the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Saints jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Coby Smith reached on an infield single. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on Jason Cooper's RBI single.

The Explorers took the lead in the third when Paul Bridenbaugh walked and was sacrificed to second. Derrick Hale was hit by a pitch and TJ Bohn walked to load the base. Kent Sakamoto drove home a pair with a single to center to make it 2-1.

The Saints tied it in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Brent Krause and Gerard Haran.

In the fourth Saints starter Joe Woerman struggled with his control walking the bottom three guys in the order before being pulled. Zach Peterson came out of the bullpen and hit Dustin Jones to force in a run making it 3-1 and Derrick Hale doubled home two making it 5-2.

The Saints got a big break in the seventh inning. With Cooper on first and two outs Brent Krause walked. Haran then hit a fly ball to center that Jones never saw and it landed well behind him scoring both runs and Haran wound up with a triple. Flint Wipke, however, popped out to end the inning.

The loss for the Saints dropped them to 2-9 in one run games and ties them for their fifth longest losing streak in franchise history.

The same two teams meet Thursday night in the finale of the four game series at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (3-3, 3.47) to the mound against Explorers RHP David Trahan (2-2, 4.65). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
