
Medina Earns Well-Deserved Win

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fort Worth Cats 4-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.
Gabe Medina pitched eight strong innings to earn his first win of the season. Medina allowed one run on five hits while striking out five. Medina walked six and threw 117 pitches in the victory.
With the Wingnuts leading 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the Cats loaded the bases with one out. Medina pitched out of the jam, striking out Jeremy Sauceda and retiring Brian Fryer on a force play.
Medina walked John Allen to begin the eighth inning but induced a double play ball from Gerardo Avila on the very next pitch. Medina struck out Michael Bell to end the inning.
The Wingnuts scratched across two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. With first and third and one out, newcomer Jose Duran hit a groundball to third base. Michael Bell attempted to come home to throw out Jeff Christy. Cats' catcher Kelley Gulledge couldn't handle the throw which allowed the run to score. Michael Thompson scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
Justin Dowdy was dominant in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Wingnuts got off to a quick start on offense, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Steve Pearson in the bottom of the second. Medina kept the Cats scoreless until the sixth when Allen singled home Sauceda to cut the lead in half. Jason Fernandez allowed two earned runs in 6.2 IP in the loss for the Cats.
The Wingnuts and Cats finish their series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Luke Massetti opposes left-hander Tim Bitten.
