WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - The Grizzlies finally broke the spell that had been cast on them by the Mighty Ducks of Cincinnati on Saturday night as theu defeated the Ducks 2-1 in a shootout. David LeNeveu stole the show making 35 saves earning the victory for Utah that snapped a four-game winless streak with the triumph.
It was a spirited first period with 26 minutes of penalties called against the two teams but neither team could find the back of the net. Cincinnati outshot the Grizzlies 7-3 as David LeNeveu and Frederic Cassivi were both perfect. The Ducks had three power play chances and the Grizzlies had one.
IN the second period, the physical play continued and both teams remained scoreless until Utah ventured onto their third power play of the game late in the period and Jarrod Skalde took a pass from Terry Virtue and snapped it by Cassivi for his eighth goal of the season and his second in as many nights after going the previous 22 games without a goal. The power play goal for Utah snapped an 0 for 30 streak. The Ducks outshot the Grizzlies 12-8 in the period for a two period total lead of 19-11.
Each team notched a goal in the third period with the Ducks striking first extending their lead to 4-1 after Dustin Penner created a turnover that found Cory Pecker in front of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Utah cut the lead to two goals late in the period with Jarrod Skalde finding the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season assisted by Justin Cox and Sonnenberg. Utah emptied the net with two minutes remaining but couldn't beat Bryzgalov falling 4-2.
The Ducks used the power play to their advantage in the third period when Michael Holmqvist scored the tying goal at the 2:09 mark of the period with the man advantage. Tomas Malec and Pierre Parenteau had the assists. The game finished regulation tied with the Ducks outgunning the Grizzlies 34-16.
Neither team could muster any offense in the overtime with each club managing just two shots on goal. The best chance came with Peter White setting up David Cornacchia for the game winner but Cassivi moved from his right to left making an unbelievable save.
In the ensuing shootout, the Grizzlies scored with all four shooters and David LeNeveu stopped the last two he faced earning the victory for Utah. Erik Westrum, Jarrod Skalde, Justin Cox and Peter White all scored in the shootout for Utah.
The shootout victory for the Grizzlies is their seventh in 11 chances, while the Ducks fall to 4-4 in shootouts.
David LeNeveu earned first star honors making 35 saves in the game.
Utah will host Houston on Wednesday night at the 'E' Center with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM.
