Dogs Double-up Runners

HAMILTON, ON - Chris Higgins had two goals and an assist, leading the Hamilton Bulldogs over the Edmonton Road Runners 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Copps Coliseum. With the win, the Bulldogs record improves to 28-26-6-5, tying them with the Road Runners in the North Division standings.

The Bulldogs scored three consecutive goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Captain Jason Ward opened the scoring on the power play at the 1:54 mark when he one-timed a pass from Corey Locke and beat Road Runners goaltender Tyler Moss on the stick-side. Then at 6:35, Antti Miettinen intercepted a pass right in front of the Edmonton net and set up Chris Higgins for his 22nd goal of the season. Forward Jonathan Ferland gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead at 16:08, banking in a shot from the side of the net past a sprawled out Moss.

Edmonton responded with two late first period goals to make the score 3-2 at the end of the frame. At 17:22, Defenceman Mathieu Roy got Edmonton on the scoreboard when his shot from the point beat a screened Yann Danis. The Road Runners then pulled within a goal when Tony Salmelainen scored with 20 seconds left in the period.

Forward Toby Petersen tied the game for the Road Runners at 18:21 of the second period. Petersen was fed a breakaway pass from Paul Healey and made no mistake, beating Danis through the five-hole.

Only 52 seconds into the third period and on the power play, Chris Higgins tallied his second goal and third point of the night from Tomas Plekanec and Antti Miettinen.

Late in the third period, the Bulldogs sealed the victory with two goals in 2:29. At 16:29, Tomas Plekanec took advantage of an Edmonton turnover and made the score 5-3. Then with Moss on the bench in favour of an extra-attacker, Jonathan Ferland scored his second goal of the game at the 18:48 mark.

The Bulldogs were effective on the power play, going 2-4 with the man-advantage, while Edmonton was 0-3 on the power play.

Jason Ward's goal in the first period was his 46th marker as a Bulldog, tying him for tenth with Jani Rita on the Bulldogs All-time goal-scoring list. Tomas Plekanec (23-28-51) and Chris Higgins (23-20-43) are now tied for the team lead with 23 goals each on the season.

The Bulldogs next game is on Friday, March 18th, when they travel to St. John's to take on the Maple Leafs at Mile One Stadium.
