Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends couldn't hold an early an early 3-0 lead, but eventually came from behind to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-4 Friday night.
The Legends jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Delino DeShields Jr. led off with a single and stole second base. After Justin Gominsky walked, Jordan Scott put down a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Kevan Smith's throw to third was too late to get DeShields, leaving the bases loaded. Zach Johnson was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and another run scored when Matt Duffy grounded into a double play.
Lexington added a run in the second. Roberto Pena led off with a walk, and with one out, DeShields beat out a bunt. Pena went to third after Gominsky flied to right field, and when DeShields stole second, Smith's throw went into center field for an error, allowing Pena to score and giving the Legends a 3-0 lead. DeShields, who had three hits in the game, leads the South Atlantic League with 10 steals and has not been thrown out.
Kannapolis cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second. With one out, Keenyn Walker doubled and scored on a single by Collin Kuhn. Kuhn took second on the throw home, and scored on Ross Wilson's two-out single to leave the score at 3-2.
The Intimidators tied the game in the third on Smith's double and Leighton Pangilinan's RBI single, and moved in front 4-3 in the fifth on singles by Smith, Rangel Ravelo and Mark Haddow.
The Legends reclaimed the lead for good in the sixth. Alex Todd led off with a hit, and Pena walked. Drew Muren grounded into a force play at second, leaving runners at first and third. DeShields struck out, but Gominsky singled, scoring Todd with the tying run. A wild pitch put runners at second and third, and Johnson's single brought home Muren, giving the Legends the lead at 5-4. Gominsky also tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Lexington added a final run in the seventh on a single by Duffy, a wild pitch, an infield out by Tyler Burnett and a single by Todd.
Kyle Hallock (1-0) pitched the first five innings and picked up the win. Carlos Quevedo worked three shutout innings, and Jason Chowning pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the year and second in two nights.
Terrence Marin (1-1), who entered the game in the fourth inning, took the loss.
The Legends have won the first two games of the four-game series, which continues Saturday night in Kannapolis. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
