Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The great start to the season for the Charleston RiverDogs continued on Friday night with a 4-3 win over the West Virginia Power in front of 5,384 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The win assured the RiverDogs of another day in first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Divison.
West Virginia scored first, pushing across a run in the second, but the RiverDogs answered in the bottom half. Tyler Austin (1-4, run scored) singled, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelvin De Leon. The RiverDogs scored again in the third when Reymond Nunez scored from second on a throwing error by West Virginia catcher Elias Diaz.
The Power tied the game in the fourth with an unearned run, but were unable to get any more runs off starter Scottie Allen, whose six quality innings kept the game even until the RiverDogs broke the deadlock in the 7th.
Ben Gamel (1-4, run scored) led off the inning with a single and moved to third after consecutive walks. A groundout by Nunez then knocked in the go-ahead run. Two more walks in the inning pushed across an important insurance run.
Fred Lewis (2-0) pitched a scoreless top of the seventh and Ben Paullus came in to try for the save. West Virginia pushed across a run in the eighth, but with the tying run at third and two outs in the ninth, Mason Williams made a great running catch in deep center to end the game and the RiverDogs had their sixth win in a row.
Ballpark Fun: Charleston County School District Teacher Appreciation Night was held at The Joe on Friday night and the CCSD Teacher of the Year was recognized during the game. The winner received a one year lease on a new car from Volvo of Charleston and drove away with the prize during the second inning. There was also an in-game ceremony for well-known Riley Park vendor Anthony Wright, better known as "Tony the Peanut Man." The RiverDogs raised awareness to the recent tragedy that Wright endured and set an example with a donation to him. Piggly Wiggly was involved as well, contributing to Tony all the peanuts that he lost in the fire. Fans who visited the Ashley View Pub could get Aluminum Pints for just $3. Any fan wearing red to the game received $1 off their ticket on General Dynamics Red Shirt Friday. Fans were then able to donate their savings to a military family in need thanks to 103.5 WEZL. The RiverDogs Express was again making the round on the warning track. Piggly Wiggly also presented fireworks after the game to give the fans yet another thrill.
Coming Up: Charleston's Will Oliver (0-1 1.64 ERA) will take on West Virginia's Nick Kingham (0-0 12.86) tomorrow night. Tri-County residents who come out to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Saturday will save $1 off their ticket on Go Local Saturday, sponsored by Lowcountry Local Magazine. Association for the Blind will present a long sleeve t-shirt giveaway for the first 1,000 fans to the park. The RiverDogs Express will be back again, not just during the pregame on the track, but during the game on the councourse.
