Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Hickory Crawdads struck for three runs in the top of the 13th inning to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-2 in 13 innings Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah. The Crawdads (10-5) have taken the first two games of the series and handed the Gnats (10-6) their first back-to-back losses of 2012.
In the 13th, with two outs and runners at second and third, Hickory third baseman Drew Robinson dumped a double just inside the leftfield line beyond the dive of Gnats' leftfielder Dustin Lawley to drive home two runs, putting Hickory in front 4-2. Robinson then scored on an RBI single by CF Chris Grayson for a 5-2 Hickory advantage.
The Gnats had just one baserunner, with two outs in the bottom of the 13th, in extra innings.
Savannah forced extras by evening the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. LF Dustin Lawley led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly-ball out to right and scored on a sacrifice fly to the warning track from CF Travis Taijeron.
Savannah starter Domingo Tapia allowed a run in each of the first two innings, but settled in nicely. Beginning in the second, he retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced. He struck out nine in his 5.2 innings of work for the Gnats.
Hickory reliever Phil Klein earned the win for holding the Gnats off the scoreboard in the 12th and 13th innings. Savannah reliever Jared West, who allowed all three runs in the 13th, was charged with the loss, his first.
Savannah pitchers struck out 23 Hickory Crawdads, a new season-high.
The Gnats and Crawdads play game three of their four-game set Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm. Savannah will send RHP Tyler Pill (1-0, 0.00) to the hill against RHP Luke Jackson (1-0, 1.84) for Hickory. Gates open at 5 pm. The radio broadcast, presented by Subway begins at 5:45 on News/Talk 630 in Savannah and online at sandgnats.com.
