Lexington Legends News Release
Telvin Nash hit a two-run walk-off home run to give the Lexington Legends a 2-0 win over Savannah in the first game of a doubleheader at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Aderlin Rodriguez' grand slam helped the Sand Gnats win the second game 7-3. Both games were seven innings in length, the standard for South Atlantic League doubleheaders.
Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Mike Kvasnicka led off with a single to right field, and Nash followed with a homer to right-center to end the game.
Lexington starter Alex Sogard went six innings, striking out seven. Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton (4-2) pitched the complete game. He allowed only a first-inning single to Jay Austin before Kvasnicka's hit in the seventh. Jorge DeLeon (4-4), who worked the seventh inning, got the win in relief.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth inning. With one out, Savannah's Alonzo Harris singled, and advanced to second when Darrell Ceciliani reached on an error. After Wilfredo Tovar singled, Harris was tagged out in a rundown between third and home, leaving runner at second and third. Two consecutive walks forced in the game's first run, and Albert Cordero then hit a line drive to third that went under the glove of Kvasnicka for an error, allowing Tovar and Fernandez to score, giving Savannah a 3-0 lead.
The Sand Gnats broke it open in the top of the seventh. Ceciliani, Tovar, and Fernandez walked to load the bases, and Rodriguez followed with a blast over the right field wall, extending the lead to 7-0.
The Legends rallied with three runs in the last of the seventh. After Jhonny Medrano reached on an error, Enrique Hernandez homered to left field. Emilio King singled, and one out later, advanced to third on Ben Orloff's single to right. Delino DeShields Jr. drove home King with a single to make the score 7-3, but reliever Hamilton Bennett retired Jay Austin and Kvasnicka to end the game.
Guillaume Leduc (2-2) got the win in relief. David Martinez (4-4) was tagged with the loss.
The Legends and Sand Gnats will play game three of their four game series tomorrow evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
