Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 13, 2011) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators held on late for a 6-5 win over Rome Braves on Wednesday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Intimidators used six runs through the first four innings and relied on pitching to limit the Braves in the later innings.
Spencer Arroyo (6-5) surrendered four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work, striking out six batters while walking one to earn the win for Kannapolis. Chris Bassitt worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning before Jon Bachanov worked the ninth for his first save of the year. The Braves pulled within a run with two outs in the ninth on Edward Salcedo's solo home run, but Juan Silverio made a sliding stab a third base on a hard ground ball and threw out the runner for the final out of the game.
Rome again struck first, taking a 2-0 lead on Robert Hefflinger's two-run double in the first inning. Kannapolis answered on Brady Shoemakers RBI-double in the bottom of the inning.
Carlos Sanchez laid down a bunt single to lead off the third inning, and Rome starter Gary Moran walked Shoemaker and Trayce Thompson to load the bases. Dan Black tied the game, 2-2, with a sacrifice fly, and Silverio followed with a two-out, two-run double to give the Intimidators a 4-2 lead.
Kannapolis kept the pressure on in the fourth inning as Marcus Semien drove Moran's offering into the right-centerfield gap for a two-run triple, giving the Intimidators a 6-2 edge. Moran (2-1) bounced back to strike out three in the fifth inning, finishing the night with five innings pitched in a losing effort, allowing six runs, nine hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Intimidators continue the four-game series against the Braves on Thursday with RHP Dexter Carter (2-4, 6.53 ERA) facing RHP Willie Kempf (0-2, 3.81 ERA). For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
