Early Runs Lead Asheville Past Delmarva, 8-2

Salisbury, Md. - The Asheville Tourists (41-48, 10-10) scored six runs in the first four innings to sprint past the Delmarva Shorebirds (43-47, 8-12) 8-2 on Wednesday night at Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds went without a hit through the first 5.1 innings.

Asheville jumped to an early lead in the second. After Scott Copeland retired the first two batters, Mark Tracy doubled and Joey Wong singled to give the Tourists a 1-0 lead. Wong reached second on the throw to the plate and scored on a single by Rafael Ortega to give the Tourists a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Corey Dickerson hit a leadoff single. Dustin Garneau followed with a controversial two-run homer that just flew over the foul pole in left field according to the plate umpire Shane Livensparger to lift the Tourists in front 4-0. Chandler Laurent reached on an error and scored later in the inning when Mark Tracy singled and was hung up in between first and second.

The Tourists tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Brett Tanos hit a one out triple. Then, Helder Velazquez singled to give the Tourists a 6-0 lead.

The Shorebirds cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. With the bases loaded courtesy of two walks and a single, Jeremy Nowak hit a tapper over the mound to score Michael Mooney from third.

Asheville added a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Laurent to score Velazquez.

The Shorebirds pulled within five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Brenden Webb hit a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Joe Oliveira.

Asheville starter Josh Slaats earned the win in six innings. He allowed just two hits and one run. Slaats fanned nine batters and retired 16 straight hitters between the first and sixth inning.

Scott Copeland was pinned with the loss in four innings. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs.

D.J. Ferguson allowed three hits and a single run over three innings. Will Startup allowed a run in the eighth while Ashur Tolliver tossed a scoreless ninth.

The Shorebirds and Tourists play game three of the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Shorebirds have not named a starter for game three.
