Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends built a 6-1 lead, and then held on to beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-4 Monday night in Salisbury, Maryland.
The Legends took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Barry Butera led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Brian Kemp and scored when Grant Hogue grounded into a force play at second base. Hogue advanced to second on Jiovanni Mier's infield out, and came home on a double by Jimmy Paredes. Paredes, who had three hits in the game, went to third on a single by Jake Goebbert and scored on a base hit by Ben Heath to give the Legends a 3-0 lead.
Justin Dalles got a run back for the Shorebirds in the bottom of the third when he led off with his fourth home run of the year.
The score remained 3-1 until the seventh inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Mier and Paredes singled, putting runners at first and third. After Paredes stole second, Goebbert doubled to deep right center field to score two runs.
The Legends added a run in the eighth to make the score 6-1. Aaron Bray led off with a double, and Jonathan Meyer walked. Butera sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Bray scored on Kemp's single to right field.
Delmarva scored one run in the eighth on a walk to T.J. Baxter, a single by Ty Kelly, and two infield outs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mike Flacco led off with a walk, but was still at first with two outs. Gary Helmick walked, and Baxter bunted for a hit to load the bases. Kelly lined a single to left center, scoring two runs and cutting the lead to 6-4. Kirk Clark, who had given up the hit to Kelly after relieving Brenden Stines, then got Steve Bumbry on a fly ball to left field to end the game.
Legends starter Zach Grimmett (5-2) pitched seven strong innings to get the win. He allowed four hits and one run, walked one batter and struck out seven. Clark picked up his 25th save, adding to his Legends' single-season and career record.
Delmarva starter Patrick Kantekevich (0-5) was the losing pitcher.
The series is even at two wins each, and concludes with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday.
