Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - In a homestand where offense has been lacking for the Augusta GreenJackets, a 14-hit effort was just what the doctor ordered in an 8-0 shutout win over the Asheville Tourists on Monday night.
Chris Dominguez and Ryan Cavan provided a pair of three-run home runs to lead the Augusta charge in the Jackets' fourth win of the homestand. Dominguez's three-run blast - his team-best 17th of the season - was the third consecutive two-out hit in the third off Asheville's Juan Gonzalez. After a 1-2-3 fourth, the GreenJackets got four straight hits to open the fifth, with RBI singles by Juan Martinez and Dominguez bringing the lead to five. Cavan later connected for his 12th home run of the season to give the GreenJackets their 8-0 advantage.
A trio of GreenJackets hurlers held the Tourists scoreless on just seven hits. Kelvin Marte, recovering from elbow surgery a year ago, started and struck out three in 3.2 scoreless innings. Wilmin Rodriguez (4-3) followed and retired five of the six hitters he faced to get the win. Jeremy Toole struck out six and allowed just three hits in four scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season and become the ninth different GreenJackets pitcher to earn a save.
In the seven previous games during this homestand, the GreenJackets were held to two or fewer runs four times. They picked up their tenth shutout win of the season, but first since May 27th when they earned a shutout over the Tourists on Asheville's last trip into town.
Gonzalez (3-6) allowed eight runs on ten hits in 4.2 innings, striking out three in his fourth consecutive loss.
With the series evened at two games apiece and the Augusta homestand evened at 4-4, the Jackets will welcome Brian Irving (6-4, 4.71) from the disabled list to start against Nick Schnaitmann (8-8, 5.33) in the series and homestand finale on Tuesday. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
Fans can purchase seats to all home games by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
