Hickory Crawdads News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - The Hickory Crawdads struck early and hung on late for the 5-3 win against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, before 5,080 fans at NewBridge Bank Park on Monday evening.

Hickory (24-18, 64-48) got out to a quick start with three runs in the first inning against Greensboro LHP Chad James (3-8). 2B Travis Adair and LF Joe Bonadonna sparked the rally with back-to-back singles, before the run-scoring blows were dealt later in the frame by CF Jared Bolden with an RBI single and 1B Mike Ortiz with a two-run infield base hit.

The Crawdads quickly stretched it to a 4-0 lead with an RBI double by DH Zach Zaneski in the top of the second, plating Bonadonna. Hickory tacked on another when Zaneski scored from third on a wild pitch in the fifth, after doubling to start the frame and advancing to third on a grounder, pushing the Crawdads lead to 5-0.

The Grasshoppers (22-21, 54-59) got on the board with a solo homer by 1B Chad Cregar in the fifth, cutting the lead to 5-1. It was the only run surrendered by LHP Chad Bell (2-1), who scattered just four hits and struck out five through six innings in his first start with Hickory.

Greensboro added two more in the bottom of the eighth when DH Kyle Jensen hit a two-run home run against LHP Robbie Erlin. Erlin, however, got out of the rest of the frame with no further damage done before dealing a scoreless ninth to close the Crawdads 5-3 win.

Bell registered the win and Erlin logged the save for Hickory, while James was tagged with the loss for Greensboro.
