Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (53-61) downed the Kannapolis Intimidators (51-61) in 4-1 fashion on Monday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The Suns victory tied the five-game series headed into Tuesday night's contest at the "Cannon," forcing the rubber match. Hagerstown took Game Four on the strength of a terrific starting pitching outing by LHP Paul Applebee (4-4).

Applebee got his first win of the season as a starter after 7.0 innings in which he allowed one earned run on seven hits. The southpaw surrendered just one walk and struck out one.

The Suns laid the first offensive blow after capitalizing on a pair of defensive miscues by the Intimidators.

Back-to-back singles by 1B Brett Newsome and DH Sandy Leon brought C Adrian Nieto to the plate. And on a sacrifice bunt attempt off the bat of Nieto, his counterpart Miguel Gonzalez threw the ball away at first base allowing Newsome to touch home for the first run of the game.

Then, with runners on second and third, after 3B Justino Cuevas lined out to Daniel Wagner at second base, Wagner attempted to double off Nieto at the second base bag, and launched the ball over the head of SS Tyler Saladino, and up the left field line. Leon would score with Nieto sliding in right behind him to give the Suns a 3-0 lead.

The sole run of the night for Kannapolis would score as the result of an RBI single by DH Brady Shoemaker in the last of the third inning, scoring Saladino who doubled to right center field.

Hagerstown RF Destin Hood drove home an insurance run in the top of the fifth frame with a sharp line drive to center field plating SS Rick Hague who singled.

Intimidators RHP Justin Collop (8-8) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run. Collop permitted four runs on eight hits, and gave up one walk, while striking out seven in the losing effort.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, an Intimidators base-runners on first and second base, Suns closer RHP Dean Weaver took to the mound. With the tying run at the plate, Weaver struck out 3B Jake Oester to end the threat. Weaver, who got another strikeout in his final frame of work, would pitch a perfect ninth inning to garner his 15th save of the season.
