Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

You could say the RailCats walked away with the win.

The Sioux Falls Canaries lost a tough one on Saturday to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 6-5. A four-run eighth inning from Gary SouthShore was the difference in the game. The RailCats scored the tying and go-ahead runs on bases-loaded walks issued by Canaries closer Ryan Flores.

The Canaries started the game off with a bang. Clint Coulter hit a two-run home run in the first, a line drive over the left-field wall. It was Coulter's second blast of the season.

Gary SouthShore got a run back in the bottom of the first. John Price, Jr. drove Andy DeJesus in with an RBI double to make it 2-1.

The Canaries responded in the second. With the bases loaded and two out, Mitch Glasser laid down a squeeze bunt, allowing Taylor to score and make it 3-1.

A fourth-inning RBI fielder's choice from Danny De la Calle gave the RailCats another run, but the game stayed tight until the sixth.

Adrian Nieto stepped up with runners on first and second and two out, lining an RBI single to right field. One run scored, and another came across when right fielder Colin Willis bobbled the ball. That gave the Birds a 5-2 lead.

Canaries starter Spencer Herrmann threw six solid innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four.

Things unraveled for Sioux Falls in the eighth. Reliever Kevin Simmons retired two of the first three hitters he faced, but allowed an RBI double from Evan Marzilli and an RBI single by Marcus Mooney to make it 5-4. With the game in the balance, Birds manager Mike Meyer called on Ryan Flores for a four-out save.

Flores walked Tom Walraven to put two on, and Zach Welz knocked an unusual single. The ball hit the foot of third-base umpire Steve Bartlestein, forcing Mooney to hold at third and loading the bases.

Flores walked Andy DeJesus to force in the tying run, and Randy Santiesteban drew a free pass of his own to score the final run of the game.

Sandy Lugo recorded the save for the RailCats, throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
