
Late Runs Lift Rafters to Thrilling Win over Woodchucks, 4-1

Wausau, WI- Derek Peake added three-hits, including the game-winning RBI single to score Charlie Curl as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (25-26, 6-10) topped the Wisconsin Woodchcucks (22-28, 10-7) by a score of 4-1, Friday evening at Athletic Park. The win successfully avoided the series sweep for the Rafters and gave them the season series eight games to two, the teams most wins against the Woodchucks in franchise history.
Michael Jurgella helped pace a nine-hit attack in the first inning when he led off with single to right field to begin the game. Jackson Slaid followed with a single to left field to advance Jurgella to third. The first run of the game came around on a sacrifice fly by Robbie Coman to bring the score to 1-0 in favor of Wisconsin Rapids.
Brad Stroik was excellent for the second-straight outing as the UW-Stevens Point junior tossed six complete innings and allowed just one runs, all while striking out a season-high six batters. Stroik retired his first nine batters-faced, including striking out six of the nine.
The Woodchucks would not record their first base hit until the fourth inning when Tyler Steib reached on a lead off double to right field. The extra base hit was the third of the series for Steib who eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Josh Goosen-Brown.
The game would settle into a nice flow as both starting pitchers departed after the sixth inning in favor of bullpen arms. The Rafters elected to send right-handed pitcher, Griffin Glaude, to the hill. The sophomore pitcher from Central Arkansas University tossed two scoreless innings, facing just seven batters the get the Rafters throught the seventh and eighth inning. Glaude has now thrown 4 1/3 innings pitched in the bullpen and has not issued a run.
The ninth inning belonged to Wisconsin Rapids as Charlie Curl opened up the ninth inning by reaching on an infield single to third. Marcus Wheeler followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Curl up to second base. With two outs in the inning, Peaked laced a well-struck ball into the hold between third and short, Woodchucks short stop, Edgar Figuerroa, made a nice play to get the ball and fired the baseball to first off his back foot, but Peake beat out the throw for his third hit of the night, to score Curl from third to give the Rafters the lead, 2-1. Wisconsin Rapids would score tow more runs in the ninth inning after Michael Jurgella reached on four-straight balls and Jackson Slaid roped a double down the left field line to empty the bases and successfully give the Rafters the lead, 4-1. The extra base hit was the 10th of the season for Slaid and successfully raised his RBI total to 37 on the season.
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters will return home Saturday night for the first game of a home-and-home series at Witter Field when the Rafters host the Lakeshore Chinooks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Athletic Park and fans can listen to Saturday night's broadcast by tuning into the radio broadcast on WFHR AM 1320. The Rafters are 1-4 this season against the Chinooks, with all five games occurring in the first half of the Northwoods League season.
