Bucks Use Trio of Homeruns to Defeat Honkers (Rochester, MN) - The Waterloo Bucks hit three two-run homeruns in a 14-2 win over the Rochester Honkers on Friday July 19 at Mayo Field.
Will Sparks was hit by a pitch to start the top of the third inning for the Bucks, he came around to score the game's first run on a two-out single from Chesny Young. John Ziznewski followed with a two-run homerun to give the Bucks an early 3-0 lead.
David Kerian blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning to increase the lead to five runs. Waterloo added three more runs in the inning on RBI hits from Sparks and Pat McKenzie to take an 8-0 lead after four and a half innings.
Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton,) and Parker Sullivan (Minnesota State-Mankato) drew walks, and Mike Friel (Hofstra) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reid Roper (Illinois) singled and Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) walked with the bases loaded to put the Honkers on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to six runs at 8-2.
Kyle Pollack added the Bucks third two-run homerun of the night in the top of the sixth inning to increase the lead to 10-2. Waterloo added one run in the top of the seventh inning and three more in the top of the ninth to build the winning margin.
Aaron Rhodes earned the win (5-1) for the Bucks, as he allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) took the loss (0-4) for the Honkers. He allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out six, in four innings of work.
Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) led the offense for Rochester, as he went 3-for-5 on the night. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) added a pair of hits, including a double.
The two teams will play the second game of a three-game series on Saturday July 20 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) is scheduled to start for Rochester (2-14, 20-31.) Landon Simpson (Arkansas) is slated to be on the mound for Waterloo (14-3, 38-13.) The three-game series are the last games before the 2013 All-Star Game in Eau Claire, WI, on Tuesday July 23 at 7:35 p.m.
