Mallards Head to Green Bay Today For First Time Since June 19th
July 19, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Green Bay, WI - The Madison Mallards will play against the Green Bay Bullfrogs at Joannes Park for the first time in a month tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
Tonight's game will also be the rubber match of a three-game series between the teams. Green Bay emerged victorious in game one by a score of 4-2 while the Mallards squeezed out a close one Thursday night by a score of 6-5.
Mallards closer Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) had a seven-out save and stymied a Bullfrogs rally by coming on with two outs in the seventh in relief of Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan). He came in with two outs and runners on first and third but didn't even need to throw a pitch, as the righty faked a pickoff attempt to third and turned around to catch the runner at first. He went on to shut the Bullfrogs down the next two innings for his Northwoods League-leading 11th save.
Tate Matheny (MIssouri State) cracked a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth by hitting a solo shot to right. The Mallards would score two more in the inning. John LaPrise (Virginia) did, however, snap his 13-game hitting streak in the game.
Starting on the hill for the Mallards tonight will be newcomer Andrew Arenson (Carthage). The 6'6," 250-pound junior has made one relief appearance for the Mallards this summer. He walked five of the eight batters he faced and allowed three runs but none of them were earned. The Mallards eventually lost 12-5 to the La Crosse Loggers that night.
This past spring with Carthage, Arenson went 1-2 in eight starts and carried a 6.75 ERA. He struck out 38 and walked 25 in 37.1 innings of work.
One to Go
May is now just one save away from tying the Mallards single-season record for saves after his 2.1 inning effort last night. May's current UNC-Charlotte teammate John Hamilton tied the record of 12 last year with the Mallards and Bubba O'Donnell also recorded 12 in the 2007 season.
Trying to Even the Series
The Mallards have perhaps had the most trouble against the Bullfrogs out of any team this year despite the Bullfrogs overall record of 21-29. The Mallards are 4-5 against the Bullfrogs this season and have committed 22 errors, six of which came last night.
