Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers ended its season series with the Mankato MoonDogs with a thrilling 3-2 win in 13 innings on Thursday July 18 at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, MN.
Timothy Arakawa started the bottom of the first inning with an infield single and Hibraim Cordova and Chase Simpson followed with singles to give the MoonDogs an early 1-0 lead. Honkers starting pitcher Matt Kent (Texas A&M) was able to escape any further damage as he retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Tyler Baker (Wichita State) got things started for Rochester in the top of the second inning with a lead-off double. He later scored on a one-out single from Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) to tie the game.
Max Murphy (Bradley) gave the Honkers their first lead of the night as he started the top of the sixth inning with his second homerun of the season. Quinnton Mack and Woody Woodward each singled to start the bottom of the inning for the MoonDogs and Matt Wollenzin reached on an error to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Mack scored when Alex Polston reached on a fielder's choice, but just as he did in the first inning, Kent was able to avoid further damage to keep the score tied at 2-2 after six innings.
Murphy started the top of the 13th inning with an infield single--the first Honkers hit since the seventh inning--and scored on a RBI double from Matt Halloran (Minnesota) to give the Honkers the lead.
Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) earned the win (1-1) for Rochester as he struck out three and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings. Paul Mittura took the loss (0-1) for Mankato. He allowed one run on three hits in two innings of work. Kent allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings, while collecting eight strikeouts. Hayden Edwards (Kansas) and Reid Roper (Illinois) combined for five hitless innings in relief for the Honkers. As a staff, the Honkers pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts on the night.
Rochester (2-13, 20-30) returns home to Mayo Field to host the Waterloo Bucks on Friday, July 19, at 7:05 p.m. Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) is scheduled to make the start for the Honkers. Aaron Rhodes (Florida) is slated to start for the Bucks.
