Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
Battle Creek, Mich - The Battle Creek Bombers (6-11) used late heroics to defeat the Lakeshore Chinooks (12-5). Battle Creek prevailed 6-5.
Lakeshore got on the board first off Battle Creek starter Kyle Slack. Jared Fon came across on a Tyler Wolfe base hit to give the Chinooks a 1-0 lead. Slack went five and two-thirds giving up three runs and striking out four. Battle Creek would respond though with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Serrano started the inning with a double and scored on a Cam Gibson single. Gibson extended his hitting streak to 27 games. In the top of the fifth, Lakeshore pushed two more runs to jump on top 3-1, but this game was far from over.
Battle Creek scored three runs in the seventh inning thanks to miscues by the Lakeshore defense. A throwing error at home plate and at third on the same play allowed three Bomber runs to come across. Lakeshore though, continued the back and forth affair into the top of the eighth inning but Battle Creek had one last rally in them. Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Serrano recorded a one out single and then Cam Gibson strolled to the plate. He took a pitch deep to right field for his first homer of the year to put the Bombers ahead for good. Gunnar Eastman (L 1-1) surrendered the homer to Gibson. Todd Eaton (W 2-4) was able to strand a couple of runners in the ninth to secure the victory. Eric Hanhold started for Lakeshore going six and two-thirds, striking out eight and giving up four run, two of which were earned. Battle Creek now welcomes in Eau Claire for a pair of games before the All-Star break.
The Battle Creek Bombers are members of the Northwoods League that has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other summer collegiate baseball league in America. For information on tickets call (269) 962-0735 or visit BattleCreekBombers.com.
