Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA -Despite consecutive day games with 90-degree temperatures, the bats for the Clinton LumberKings have gone cold. After scoring just one run in yesterday's series finale against Peoria, the L-Kings again struggled at the plate, notching one run on six hits in a 2-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Kernels right-hander Andy Hill (W, 1-0) made a spectacular season debut, pitching six shutout innings for the win.

LumberKings starter Juan Jimenez (L, 1-1) was just as impressive, striking out ten batters while allowing just two hits through six frames. However, the lone blemish on Jimenez's line was also the game-winner - a two-run homer by Kernels shortstop Larry Infante that landed in the Lumber Lounge.

The L-Kings made a push in the ninth inning, loading the bases against Kernels closer Ryan Aldridge. Righthander Chris Howell (S, 1) came on to finish the frame, allowing a sacrifice fly by Matt Smith to score K.C. Herren from third base, but inducing Jose Vallejo into a groundout to end the game.

Freddie Thon went 1-for-4 on the night, extending his team-high hitting streak to nine games. Smith was the only LumberKing with more than one hit, going 2-for-4.

The loss drops the LumberKings to 18-32 on the season, while the Kernels improve to 23-28. The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch set for 6:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
