West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Will Rhymes delivered the go ahead single in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 6-5 Whitecaps victory over Dayton. West Michigan has won four games in a row for the third time this season even though the Whitecaps have trailed in three of the last four games.
Josh Rainwater threw four shutout innings of relief to earn his first victory of the season.
Starting pitcher Ramon Garcia, who had not allowed more than two runs in a single game this year, was touched by the Dragons for four runs in just four innings of work. It was also the shortest outing of the season for Garcia, who had allowed just two run in his last 39 innings pitched before Monday.
Closer Orlando Perdomo earned his 14th save in 15 opportunities for West Michigan by keeping the Dragons off the scoreboard in the ninth.
Justin Justice drove in one run in each of three different innings for the Whitecaps. The last Justice RBI came in the seventh when he tied the game with a run-scoring triple.
Matt Joyce delivered a two-run triple in the bottom of the third that erased a 1-0 deficit and put West Michigan on top, 2-1.
Dayton struck first with a solo home run in the first inning by Eric Eymann. The Dragons claimed a two-run lead with four runs in the fourth. Gerardo Cabrera had the big hit of the inning - a two-run triple to put Dayton on top, 4-3. Mike DeJesus then drove in Cabrera with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 advantage.
The four run fourth marked only the second time this season that the Whitecaps have allowed more than three runs in an inning.
Roster Move: The Detroit Tigers announced today that West Michigan Whitecaps first baseman Ryan Roberson has been placed on the disabled list. The Tigers have assigned Max Leon to West Michigan from extended spring training in Lakeland, Florida.
Roberson played in 34 games for the Whitecaps as a first baseman and designated hitter before he sprained his left wrist. He last played on May 18 at Peoria.
Max Leon will make his professional debut with the Whitecaps. He was drafted by the Tigers in the 50th round of the June 2004 draft. He was signed as a draft-and-follow on June 6, 2005. The switch-hitting second baseman is from Sonora, Mexico and is 21 years old.
