Fort Wayne, IN - Catcher Nick Hundley was placed on the disabled list today and third baseman Chad Steiner announced his retirement from baseball, the Fort Wayne Wizards announced.

Hundley was injured on Sunday after taking a foul ball off his throwing hand in the ninth inning of the Wizards 2-0 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays affiliate).

Infielder Rayner Contreras and catcher Luany Sanchez were both promoted to Fort Wayne from the San Diego Padres extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.

Contreras, signed by the Padres organization as a free agent in 2004, spent last season with the Padres Dominican Summer League team. In 28 games, he hit .277, with a pair of doubles and triples, scored 21 runs, and drove in 19 runs. He was 7-of-11 in stolen base attempts.

Sanchez, who signed with the San Diego system in 2003, hit .302 with 15 doubles, one triple and home run, along with 26 runs batted in, in 43 games with the Rookie-level Peoria Padres last year. He was third in the Padres minor league system with a .302 average and was second in the Arizona League with his 15 doubles.

Hundley is currently hitting .238 with 12 doubles and 19 RBI in 34 games for the Wizards this season. Steiner was hitting .215 with five doubles, one triple and one home run, along with 20 RBI for Fort Wayne.

Both Contreras and Sanchez will be active as the Wizards open a four-game series with their in-state rival, the South Bend Silverhawks (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate), at 4:00 p.m. today.
