Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 29, 2006) "" The Burlington Bees (24-24) opened their home stand with extra innings against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (19-31) and won 3-2 when reliever Ruben Flores fielded a ball and fired it down the right field line allowing Chris McConnell to score the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth at Community Field tonight. The Bees are back to .500 for the ninth time this season and lead the season series 4-1 over the Timber Rattlers.
The Bees got their first run thanks to a throwing error by Wisconsin starter Paul Fagan. Jose Duarte led off the bottom of the third inning with a soft hit between the mound and home. Fagan's throw also sailed down the right field line allowing Duarte to reach and get to second. Duarte moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle by Josh Johnson. Duarte would single in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games, now the longest by a Bees' player this season.
Bees' starter Michael Penn worked through five scoreless innings before the Rattlers got on the board in the sixth. Ron Garth singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Craig to even things up. It was the only run allowed by Penn, who pitched a career-high seven innings.
Fagan also set a season-high as he worked into the eighth inning, but came out after a leadoffa leadoff walk to Johnson and a sacrifice bunt by McConnell. Edgar Guaramato replaced him and gave up a double to right-center by Mario Lisson that drove in the go-ahead run.
Yovany Damico had retired the Rattlers in order in the eighth and the Bees turned to Gilbert De La Vara for the save chance in the ninth. Craig led off the single and after a popout, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a bounce out by Luis Valbuena. De La Vara was charged with his second blown save of the year in eight attempts, but got out of the inning with the score still tied. The Bees got two men on in the bottom of the ninth, but the Rattlers turned a double play to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, Michael Saunders hit a fly ball into left-center field that went off the glove of defensive replacement Ethien Santana and fell in for a triple. With the go-ahead run on third and no out, De La Vara struck out pinch-hitter Curtis Ledbetter for the first out. Eddy Hernandez was next, swung on 3-0, and hit a bouncing ball right to Johnson at second. The throw to the plate was well ahead of Saunders, who lowered his shoulder and delivered a tremendous blow to knock over Bees' catcher JP Lowen, but Lowen held onto the ball for the second out. De La Vara then got Jeff Dominguez to popout to end the inning.
Flores (0-4) replaced Guaramato in the bottom of the tenth. McConnell led off with a single and Lisson moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Miguel Vega hit the slow chopper on the next pitch that turned into the error that decided the game. De La Vara (3-2) got the win.
The Bees and Timber Rattlers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Matt Kniginyzky (5-2, 2.98) will go for his fourth consecutive win against LH Harold Williams (0-1, 2.43). The gates will open at 6:00 for a Hawk Eye 2-for-Tuesday. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show staring at 6:40.
