Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities were seemingly in control heading into the bottom of the eighth Monday evening at Pohlman Field, but the Beloit Snappers rallied to pull out an 8-6 win. In relief of Adam Daniels, the Swing bullpen watched the Snappers put together a four-run inning to turn a two-run deficit into a two-run lead.
Quad Cities (20-28) dropped the series opener for the ninth time in 14 tries this season, as they embark on an eight-game road trip. Beloit (25-24) gets back over .500 with the win, handing the Swing their eighth loss of the season when leading in a ballgame.
Quad Cities was ahead 6-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth when the relief corps took over. Scott Vander Weg allowed consecutive one-out singles to start the inning, and was then taken down for Brian Stitt. The Swing closer did not fare any better, though, giving up a two-run double to Paul Kelly on his first pitch that tied the game at six. After an intentional walk and a single loaded the bases, Beloit snatched the lead on a fielder's choice groundout by Henry Sanchez. The Snappers put the icing on the cake with a line drive single to left off the bat of Caleb Moore, scoring the final run for the 8-6 margin.
The first time the Swing and Snappers met, Quad Cities committed 19 errors in the four game series that led to 15 unearned runs. Early on in this match-up, unearned runs were again the name of the game.
In the top of the first Monday, Beloit gave some of those unearned runs back. After a leadoff single by Daniel Nelson, Casey Rowlett's deep fly ball to left-center was dropped by Tarrence Patterson as he twisted and turned on the warning track. With men on second and third, Colby Rasmus followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. There was still nobody out and men on the corners when Rasmus took off for second, stealing the bag as the throw skipped into center field. That allowed Rowlett to score and Rasmus to move to third, setting the stage for Adam Rodgers' run-scoring groundout. On three unearned runs, Quad Cities took a 3-0 advantage.
Courtesy of some more unearned runs, Beloit rallied in the bottom of the third to tie and take the lead. Luis Cotto's throw to first pulled Randy Roth off the bag to allow Eli Tintor to reach opening up the frame. Consecutive singles followed to give the Snappers their first run, and a fielder's choice groundout cut the lead to 3-2. With one out Paul Kelly then slapped an opposite-field triple to right field that tied the game, and he came home to score on a wild pitch later in the inning to put Beloit out in front, 4-3.
On this Memorial Day, however, the Swing had some fight left in them. Daniel Nelson got a pitch to his liking that hung up in the zone, and he bashed it over the left field fence to tie the game at four. For the switch-hitting Nelson - who entered the game with 10 extra base hits on the year from the left side of the plate - it was his first extra base knock as a righty this season. The 22-year-old native of Los Angeles has three home runs and 16 stolen bases in 2006 after totaling only eight swiped bags and no home runs in his first two professional seasons.
Quad Cities added single runs in the sixth and seventh to grab the lead. With men on the corners and two outs in the top of the sixth, Luis Cotto took off with the pitch towards second base. As the catcher threw that way Jose Martinez had already begun breaking for the plate, giving the Swing the lead as Cotto stopped to create a rundown. One inning later Simon Williams started a rally with a leadoff single and came home on a double by Casey Rowlett into left-center. The Swing boasted a 6-4 lead at that point, but it would not last.
Despite allowing four runs - only two of which were earned - on three hits in the third inning, starter Adam Daniels was solid in a career-high seven innings of work. He was touched for seven hits overall while striking out four without issuing a walk. The Canadian southpaw out of Oklahoma State narrowly missed snapping his losing streak at four consecutive decisions for the second time in three starts after lasting 4.1 innings in a Swing win on May 18.
Stitt (0-2) took the loss for Quad Cities while failing to convert his first save opportunity in four tries this season. The former Mariners' farmhand gave up two runs on three hits in .2 innings of work and issued his first walk of the season, an intentional pass to Erik Lis during the decisive eighth inning comeback.
David Shinskie (4-3) earned the win for Beloit with 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, striking out one and walking one without giving up a hit. He came on in relief of starter Ryan Mullins, who allowed six runs - three earned - on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
