May 29, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored four runs in the first three innings and then held off two Quad Cities rallies for a 4-3 win in front of 4,102 fans at John O'Donnel Stadium on Sunday night.

Tommy Mendoza (2-5) picked up his first win since April 11th, going seven innings and allowing only four hits. Mendoza gave up three runs, all in the third inning, and struck out seven. Cory Meacham (3-3) took the loss for the Swing.

The Kernels manufactured a run in the first, as Hainley Statia doubled and went to third on a Brad Coon sacrifice bunt. He then scored on a Mark Trumbo sac fly to center.

Cedar Rapids scratched out another run in the second as newcomer Tyler Johnson singled and moved to third on groundouts by Dallas Morris and Marco Albano. Johnson scored on Brett Martinez RBI single to make the score 2-0 Kernels.

The Kernels made the score 4-0 as Mark Trumbo hit his seventh home run of the year, scoring Brad Coon.

Quad Cities scored all their runs in the bottom of the third and with two outs as Colby Rasmus had a 2 RBI single and Randy Roth hit an RBI single to make the score 4-3 Kernels.

But that would be all the runs the Swing would get as Mendoza and three Kernel relievers; Tim Didjurgis, Brad Beck and Ryan Aldridge, held Quad Cities in check the rest of the game. Aldridge earned his ninth save to help the Kernels improve to 22-28 on the season.

The Kernels now move 20 miles to the north and start a four game series with the Clinton LumberKings on Monday at 2 pm. Andy Hill makes his first start for the Kernels after joining the team last week. The team returns to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, June 2nd to start a four game series with the Burlington Bees. Game time on Friday is 7 pm as the gates open at 6 pm.
