
Prior Pitches Two Innings, Takes Loss as Chiefs Fall 8-2

Peoria, IL - Starting pitcher Mark Prior gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out three as the Peoria Chiefs fell 8-2 to the Kane County Cougars Monday night in front of a crowd of 5,865 at O'Brien Field. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 28-21 on the half, 2 ½ games behind first place Kane County.
Prior didn't allow a hit in the fist inning as just one batter reached on an error. With the game scoreless in the top of the second, Kane County jumped on top. With one out and nobody on, right-fielder Jose Pineda knocked a homer to left. Issac Omura and Raul Padron then recorded back to back singles. They both came into score on a single by Mike Massaro and an error by the Chiefs' defense to put the Cougars up 3-0. Prior was at his pitch count after two innings and didn't return for the third. Overall the right hander threw 44 pitches, 28 strikes while allowing three runs (2 earned) on four hits. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk.
The Cougars scored two in both the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, Nick Blasi had an RBI double coupled with Jeffrey Baisley's league leading 42nd run driven-in to make it a 5-0 lead. Kane County added two more on a Massaro single in the seventh.
Justin Sellers added the exclamation point in the top half of inning number nine with a HR to left, just clearing the wall to give the Cougars a 8-2 lead.
The Chiefs finally got on the board in the fifth. Matt Ciaramella and Davy Gregg led off the inning with consecutive singles. With Ciaramella on third, Robinson Chirinos delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
Kyle Reynolds provided a little more offense in the seventh. After narrowly missing a homer in his previous at-bat, the Chiefs' third baseman launched one into the picnic area in right field.
Justin Rayborn came in and pitched a scoreless third. He was followed by Jesus Yepez who gave up four runs and 10 hits over four innings. Mike Billek pitched a spotless eighth before allowing a solo homer in the ninth. Kane County starter Trey Shields picked up the win. The right-hander threw seven innings giving up two runs on eight hits.

Robinson Chirinos (2B) - The Chiefs' second baseman was 2-4 with a walk and a RBI sacrifice fly. In the last three games he is 9-for-11.
Notes...After a 0-5 night, Jesus Valdez's hitting streak ended at 19 games, tied for 3rd longest in Chiefs history and tied for the longest in the MWL in 2006...Attendance Monday night was 5,865 .....Chirinos has hit safely in 9 of his last 11 ABs...RHP Mitch Atkins (3-0, 2.01) will start on the mound tomorrow going up against RHP Jared Lansford (4-1, 0.90)...First pitch is slated for 6:30 PM and the pre-game show will kick-off at 6:15 on www.peoriachiefs.com.
