Late rally comes up short for River Cats
July 28, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A night after breaking out for 18 runs on 16 hits, the Sacramento River Cats (57-49) were stifled by the Tacoma Rainiers (49-57), dropping game two of their three-game series by a score of 5-2.
The River Cats offense was held in check on Saturday night against a Rainiers staff that was ravaged the night before. The River Cats had a golden opportunity in the seventh when Rainier pitchers walked the bases loaded with one away - the River Cats squeezed across two runs on a wild pitch and RBI-single from Abiatal Avelino, but would get no closer. Sacramento managed just five hits overall, none going for extra bases.
Starter Enderson Franco delivered a strong performance in a losing effort, allowing just two runs, three hits and striking out five over five innings of work. Rehabbing San Francisco Giants' relievers Travis Bergen and Nick Vincent combined for three innings of one-run ball while striking out five batters.
Left-hander Andrew Suarez (5-6, 5.82) will take the mound for the final game of the season-series against the Rainiers. Tacoma will turn to right-hander Darren McCaughan (0-2, 6.30). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. (PT). Listen to all of the action live online at rivercats.com, on the MiLB First Pitch app, on Money 105.5 FM (PT).
Additional Notes
- Outfielder Joey Rickard continues to pile up the hits as he extended his hit streak to 11 games. Previously red-hot Chris Shaw cooled off Saturday, failing to record a hit to end his hit streak at 11 games.
- Mike Gerber went 1-for-3 tonight and is now hitting .339 since the all-star break including six homers and 21 runs batted in.
