Iowa's 16 Hits Fall Short against Round Rock
July 28, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Phillip Evans went 5-for-5 but Iowa's season-high 16 hits weren't enough as the I-Cubs (57-50) dropped a 13-9 game to the Round Rock Express (62-44), Sunday at Principal Park.
Cole Hamels made his second rehab start with Iowa and was tagged for a quick three runs in the first on Drew Ferguson and Kyle Tucker homers. The lefty found his groove and ultimately used 59 pitches, 36 strikes, to work 3.0 innings. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out four.
Iowa responded to Round Rock's three-spot with a trio of its own runs in the bottom of the first. Dixon Machado got the scoring started with a solo home run and the home team plated another pair on four total hits in the frame.
The two teams traded runs through the game, deadlocking the game 8-8 after six and again at 9-9 after eight. Machado highlighted the action with a home run in the sixth for his second of the game and his first career multi-hit contest.
Round Rock put the game out of reach in the ninth with a four-run frame. Alex De Goti roped a double for the lead and a wild inning from Dillon Maples allowed three more to score on a pair of wild pitches and a bases-loaded walk. Outfielder Donnie Dewees forced Tucker to fly out for the final out of the inning.
Iowa's offensive outpouring was highlighted by Evan's career-high five hits and four hits from Mark Zagunis, which also matched a career best. Jim Adduci, Dewees and Machado all contributed two-hit games, but the Iowa offense left 10 stranded and went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Phillip Evans' five hits were the most for an I-Cub since David Bote went 5-for-5 on May 6, 2018 in Round Rock.

- Iowa pitchers tied a season high with 12 walks.
