Late Mets Runs Spoil Hankins Solid Start

The SeaWolves fell behind late and dropped their third straight game, 5-2, on Tuesday night to the Binghamton Mets.

Binghamton jumped ahead in the second against Erie starter Derek Hankins when Josh Rodriguez belted a solo home run to center for a 1-0 lead.

Erie tied the game in the top of the sixth against Mets starter Matt Koch. With two outs, Harold Castro pushed a single through the right side, putting the tying run on base. Josh Prince followed with a double off the wall in left, scoring Castro, tying the game.

The SeaWolves would take the lead in the top of the eighth. Wynton Bernard led off with a single. Miguel Gonzalez followed and laid down a sacrifice bunt. An error on the play allowed both Bernard and Gonzalez to reach safely. Bernard then stole third and scored on a Castro sacrifice fly to left for a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Mets charged right back in the last of the eighth. With one out, Dustin Lawley homered off of Hankins, tying the game. With two outs, Jairo Perez and Eudy Pina each singled, pushing the go-ahead run into scoring position. Gilbert Gomez followed with a base hit, scoring Perez for a 3-2 Mets lead. After a Brandon Nimmo walk, Hankins was lifted in favor of Edgar De La Rosa. Jayce Boyd singled home a pair giving the Mets a 5-2 lead. Erie would get no closer.

Hankins (1-2) took the loss allowing five runs on seven this with two walks and three strikeouts in a season-high 7.2 innings of work.
