Akron RubberDucks News Release

Akron's Jordan Smith had three hits, including a triple and a grand slam, on Tuesday night, as the RubberDucks cruised to a 12-4 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils at First Energy Stadium.

Turning Point

The RubberDucks (5-7) were leading 4-1, when they erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth inning against lefty Tom Windle (0-1). Ollie Linton led off with a double and scored on a single by Yandy Diaz. After a double and intentional walk loaded the bases, Smith scorched a line drive over the right field wall for a grand slam to make it 9-1. It was Smith's first homer of the season.

Mound Presence

The run support was a welcome sight for Akron starter Cody Anderson (1-1). The RubberDucks had not scored a run while Anderson was in the game in either of his first two starts. With a comfortable lead to work with, Anderson dealt six strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits. His own throwing error made one of the runs unearned. Anderson walked one and struck out six, and lowered his ERA to 1.47. He has worked at least six innings in all three of his starts.

Duck Tales

Smith flirted with the cycle. He tripled in his first at-bat, homered in the fifth inning and singled in the seventh. He came to the plate in the eighth inning needing a double, but was walked by Reading reliever Stephen Shackleford. Ironically, Smith hit for the cycle in a game against the Fightin Phils at First Energy Stadium last July 27th. Erik Gonzalez also homered for the RubberDucks, a solo shot to center in the third inning. Catcher Tony Wolters also enjoyed a productive night at the plate, going 3-5, with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Notes
