Nashville Sounds News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS -- Nashville rightfielder J.J. Davis homered in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Sounds over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 9-8, on Sunday evening in the third game of a four-game series at Sky Sox Stadium.
Davis, who finished with two hits, produced a run-scoring groundout in the first inning to open the scoring and then launched a ninth-inning offering from Chris Gissell over the center field fence to snap an 8-8 tie.
The game-winning longball was Davis' team-leading 20th of the season, making him just the third 20-20 man in Nashville's 26-year history (Paul Householder and Chad Hermansen also tallied 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season as Sounds).
Dave Doster added an RBI double in the first frame and ripped a solo shot in the third to give Nashville a brief 4-2 lead. The two hits extended the infielder's season-best hitting streak to eight games. Tony Alvarez doubled in a run in the seventh inning and Tike Redman and Rich Thompson both drove in a run in the eighth to even the score for the Sounds, who rallied with five unanswered runs to erase an 8-4 deficit and improve to 7-4 on their current road trip.
Justin Reid (3-3) struck out a pair of batters in two perfect innings to earn the win and Mark Corey tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his league-leading 29th save.
Nashville starter Dave Williams was hit hard for the second time in his last three starts, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits over just 3 2/3 innings, but received a no-decision. Newly-acquired left-hander Frank Brooks tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Sounds in the contest.
Sky Sox first baseman Kit Pellow, who had two home runs in Saturday's win, hit a solo shot in the second inning and added a sacrifice fly in his next plate appearance for Colorado Springs. Clint Barmes hit a bases-loaded single to plate two runs, sparking a five-run, fourth inning that was capped by a run-scoring single by both Garrett Atkins and Luke Allen.
Gissell (4-3) surrendered a solo homer in the ninth inning to suffer the loss for the Sky Sox.
The clubs wrap up their four-game series with an 8:05 p.m. CDT meeting on Monday evening. Nashville right-hander Pat Mahomes (7-4, 3.08) makes his second start of the season. He is scheduled to face Colorado Springs southpaw Chris Michalak (7-9, 4.41).
