Portland Beavers News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - Alex Fernandez hit a three-run home run to highlight a seven-run sixth inning Sunday night as the Portland Beavers moved to within two games of division-leading Edmonton with a 15-8 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies.

Mike Bynum busted a personal seven-game losing streak by picking up the victory, his first since June 3. Bynum (5-8) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

Bynum had lost his last six starts coming into Sunday's contest.

Xavier Nady had a three-run homer in the third, his first since joining the club on Thursday, to give Portland their first lead. Jason Bay, who scored twice and drove in four runs, added his team-leading 17th round-tripper in the ninth as the Beavers won for the fourth time in their last give games.

Bay has at least one hit in each of the seven games on the current roadtrip.

Khalil Greene had three hits (including two doubles) and scored a season-high four runs for the Beavers (54-55). Fernandez, who added an RBI double in the fifth, had three hits and tallied four RBIs on the night.

The Beavers pounded out 19 hits in the game and each starting position player had at least two hits except for Bernie Castro, who went 0-for-6.

Joe Horgan took the loss in relief for the Grizzlies.

Up 5-4, the Beavers pulled away with a seven-run sixth inning, tying a season-high for most runs scored in an inning by the club.

Fresno (43-65) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

North Division-leading Edmonton dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday against Tucson, allowing the Beavers to climb to within two games of the Trappers in the divisional race.

NOTES: Hall-of-fame pitcher Jim Palmer will be in attendance as the Portland Beavers take on the Sacramento River Cats, Wednesday, July 30, at PGE Park ... this summer, Palmer, who will be available for autographs during his visit to PGE Park, is teaming up with Minor League Baseball and AstraZeneca to take his "Pitching in for Community Health" tour to more than 25 minor league ballparks across the country ... Mike Bynum and Steve Watkins, both pitchers, doubled in Sunday's win.
