Edmonton Trappers News Release

Right-hander John Patterson (7-4) was stellar for 6.0 innings, allowing only three runs on six hits, while striking out eight as the Tucson Sidewinders downed the Edmonton Trappers 9-4 Monday afternoon at TELUS Field. In his last start against the Trappers on July 18 Patterson tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout as the Sidewinders defeated Edmonton 10-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. Patterson, rated as the Arizona Diamondbacks fourth-best prospect entering the season, compiled a 3-0 record in three starts against the Trappers this season. The loss was the fifth in a row for Edmonton, who are still lead in first place in the North Division despite the losing streak. The Trappers last lengthy homestand of the season did not turn out as hoped for the club as they dropped seven of the nine games. Tucson book ended the season series with four wins at the beginning of the campaign and five victories to close out this six-game series. Overall the Sidewinders won 10 of the 16 games played between the two clubs. The Trappers will begin a four-game series in Tacoma on Tuesday night.

The Sidewinders took an early lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. Patterson led off the inning with a hard-hit bouncer right back at Edmonton starter Sun Woo Kim (6-6). Luis Terrero followed with a base hit to put runners at first and second for Brian Gordon, who reached on an infield single. Trapper first baseman Valentino Pascucci tossed the ball away on the play, allowing Patterson to score and Terrero to move to third. Chad Tracy then doubled, plating Terrero with the second run. A single by first baseman Lyle Overbay scored Gordon. Left fielder Doug DeVore reached on an error by shortstop Anthony Medrano, which allowed Tracy to score the fourth and final run of the inning. Tucson added two more runs in the fifth inning off Kim, who surrendered six runs on 11 hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of work. Overbay doubled to start the inning and scored on a one-out single by DeVore, who later raced home on a double to left-center field by Jhonny Carvajal.

Tucson scored two runs off reliever Kevin Joseph in the seventh inning as DeVore led off with a single, Carvajal singled with one out and Terrero plated both runners with a triple down the left field line. After scoring only two runs in the previous 36 innings the Trappers finally broke out with a three-run outburst in the seventh. Luis Figueroa led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Terrmel Sledge followed with his team-leading eighth triple of the season to break up Patterson's shutout. Tucson shortstop Tim Olson threw wildly in an attempt to get Sledge at third, allowing the right fielder to score the Trappers second run. Valentino Pascucci reached on an infield single and Matt Cepicky followed with a base hit to right to put runners at the corners for Scott Hodges, who doubled to left, plating Pascucci with the third run. Tucson added another run in the eighth inning off lefty Anthony Ferrari. Tracy led off with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Robby Hammock. With two out Olson singled into center field to plate Tracy with the Sidewinders final run. Figueroa drew a walk off reliever Bret Prinz with one out in the eighth and later tallied the game's final run on a single to left by Pascucci.
