COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Tucson Sidewinders right-hand pitcher Paul Abbott has been named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for games beginning on July 21st and continuing through July 27th, by winning both of his starts for the week, one of them in shutout fashion. New Orleans Zephyrs center fielder Colin Porter claims Batter of the Week for the same period by hitting for a .500 average and driving in 10 runs in seven games.

Abbott, who lives in Fullerton, California, began the week on July 21st by earning a victory over the Salt Lake Stingers after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out 12 batters in just 6.1 innings pitched. On July 26th, the veteran pitcher took the hill at Edmonton in the second game of a twin-bill and threw a five-hit, complete 7-inning game shutout in which he walked one batter and struck out seven en route to a 7-0 Sidewinders win. The victory is the third on the year for Abbott, who is in his first year in the Arizona Diamondbacks system after having spent the last six seasons with the Seattle Mariners organization.

Meanwhile, Porter, a Tucson native, began his week by going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a home run, and four runs batted in as the Zephyrs downed Albuquerque 7-1 on July 22nd. After posting two more 2-for-4 performances, the New Orleans road trip continued to Oklahoma City, where the left-handed Porter put on a weekend hitting clinic. On July 26th, the center fielder went 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI, a home run, and a double before coming back the following day and going 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs batted in. For the week, Porter scored seven times, collected five doubles, and had a 1.000 slugging percentage, earning himself a promotion to the parent Houston Astros.
