Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers snapped a 10 game losing streak in series openers, as they took the first game of their series against the Windy City Thunderbolts, with an 8-3 victory at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night.

The victory for the Crushers (34-30) was their first in a series opener, since June 21, when they defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums, 1-0. The loss for the Thunderbolts (24-39) drops their record to 9-16 in the month of July.

Lake Erie's offense erupted for eight runs on 14 hits, including a trio of solo homers.

Craig Hertler began the bottom of the first inning with his first homer of the season, a solo shot deposited under the scoreboard in right center. Emmanuel Quiles followed with a double to left, and he scored moments later on Andrew Davis's double to the gap in right-center.

Ryan Tufts started the inning with a base hit, and advanced to second on the play on Zach Gordon's (2-2) throwing error. A groundout shifted him over to third and he came home Max White's groundout.

Lake Erie answered in the home half of the third, on their second of three homers on the night, as Anderson Hidalgo hit solo bomb, his third of the season. Windy City responded a half inning later to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. Davidson Peguero drove in the first run on a RBI single and White drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

The Crushers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, and scored in every inning thereafter. Quiles started the rally with a one out single, and made his way to third on a double from Davis. A wild pitch plated Quiles, and Juan Sanchez drove Davis home on a sac fly.

Adam Ford started the sixth inning with a free pass, and advanced to third on a double from Ryan Hutchison. With the infield drawn in, Trevor Stevens singled back up the middle, and brought Ford home to give the Crushers a 6-3 advantage.

Hidalgo brought in another run for the Crushers in the bottom of the seventh inning on a RBI single through the left side to plate Quiles, and Hutchison smashed a solo homer in the eighth, his fifth of the season to plate the final run of the game.

Gordon score his second straight victory, allowing just three runs on six hits while fanning four over six innings of action. The trio of Brad Zambron, Brandon Smith and Trevor Longfellow combined to toss three perfect innings of relief for the Crushers with seven strikeouts. Travis Tingle (6-4) took the loss, after allowing five runs on 10 hits over five innings.

Six Crushers hit safely multiple times on the night. Hertler's 2-for-5 performance extended his hitting streak to nine games and his on base streak to 17. Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 15 games while going 1-for-3. Davis went 2-for-4, giving him five multi-hit games over his current six game hitting streak. Hidalgo's 2-for-3 performance extended his on base streak to 11 games, while Quiles, Hutchison and Stevens also hit safely twice on the night.

The Crushers will continue their three-game series against the Windy City Thunderbolts at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Lefty Todd Kibby (5-2, 2.22) will throw for the Crushers, and the Thunderbolts will counter with left-hander Josh Spence (0-5, 5.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
