O'Fallon, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a 5-0 lead and fell 7-6 to the River City Rascals in 13 innings on Tuesday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
The CornBelters tallied first in the fourth inning when Aaron Dudley doubled with two outs into the right field corner and scored on a single through the left side by Richard Lucas. Normal pushed the lead to 4-0 on a three-run homer high into the left field bleachers by Sam Judah in the fifth inning. The Belters continued the fifth by loading the bases and extending the lead to 5-0 on an RBI single by Ozney Guillen.
The Rascals dented the scoreboard for the first time in their fifth inning on a two-run homer to the right center field bullpen by Johnny Morales to cut the Belters lead to 5-2.
Judah drilled his second home run of the night over the right center bullpen with two outs in the sixth to push the Belters advantage to 6-2.
River City scored four in the seventh off reliever Eric Anderson as they took advantage of two walks in the seventh, scoring one on a flare to the left field line by Saxon Butler and three more on a towering home run over the right center field clubhouse by Joe Staley to tie the game at 6-6.
The game remained even until the lead-off hitter of the 13th inning, as Brian Hansen sent a 1-0 pitch high above the left field bleachers for the win.
Chandler Jagodzinski (3-0) picked up the win while Charley Short (6-2) took the loss. Belters starter Bobby Shore turned in a quality start but did not receive a decision. The CornBelters left the bases loaded three times and stranded 21 runners. The game was played in 5:44, nine minutes short of a Frontier League record.
The Belters return home Wednesday through Sunday for a six-game home stand with single games at 7:00 each night except Sunday's 6 p.m. doubleheader. The home stand begins with a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners with right-hander Kurt Schluter (0-1, 5.29 ERA) starting on the mound for the Belters as the Miners counter with righty Steve Hagen (0-0, 0.00). Pre-game at www.normalbaseball.com begins at 6:50.
